Library job cuts in savings plan

Some libraries will become self-service branches

Up to 25 jobs may be cut at libraries in Cornwall as part of moves to help the service save £250,000.

The money is needed to pay increased staff and building costs, but it is hoped any job losses will be achieved through natural wastage.

Charges for overdue books and computer use at libraries may also be increased under the proposals which are being considered by county councillors.

Spending on books, CDs and DVDs will also be frozen, if plans are approved.

Eighteen libraries will become self-service branches using microchips to track books on loan.

The new tagging system would cost £1.25m to install, but councillors said it would pay for itself within seven years.

Charges for overdue books will rise by one pence and, if these plans are adopted by the county council, people will have to pay to use computers from April if they are not library members.
