Wine goes under hammer for £2,200

A bottle of 86-year-old white wine has fetched £2,200 at auction in Norfolk.

The dessert tipple from the Bordeaux region was expected to make £1,000 but went under the hammer for more than double at the sale on Thursday.

Auctioneer Martyn Fox said the 1921 Chateau d'Yquem was said to be the best vintage in the 20th Century.

Keys Auctioneers who held the sale said investors normally looked to fortified wines such as port for an investment, as wine has a shorter shelf-life.

The sale at Aylsham featured 500 bottles of wine, mainly fortified.

Mr Fox said: "We sold a 1917 Taylor's Port for £260. People buy port to invest in, Port will carry on forever.

"Wine will keep very well but whether it will last long is a very good question."
