Black comedy In Bruges, gambling drama 21 and horror film The Eye made up the rest of the top 10.
Meanwhile in a new development on the North American box office chart, Speed Racer fell to third place after film studios over-estimated its success by $1.6m (£820,000).
Initial forecasts placed the film in second place after its opening weekend on $20.2m (£10.4m), but final figures revised this total to $18.6m (£9.5m).
The film - made by the Wachowski brothers, best-known for The Matrix franchise - cost $120m (£61.6m) to make.
Going into the weekend, Speed Racer had been the best hope of film studio Warner Bros of giving Iron Man, the current box office champion, a run for its money.
The change pushed What Happens in Vegas into second place after taking $20.2m (£10.4m), slightly above its original estimate.
