In pictures: Your hands analysed

Gordon Brown's ink-stained hands

Nice suit, shame about the hands. Style expert Veronique Henderson says Gordon Brown's bitten nails and stained fingers show signs of a man under stress. So we asked her to analyse your hands...

Sobia Amber Shakil

"Lovely, well groomed and she looks after her skin," Veronique says of florist Sobia Amber Shakil's hands. "She does her own nails, and likes to be natural - she doesn't use coloured polish."

Alan Slater

"He dresses like a student but these are not a young man's hands," says Veronique. "Perhaps he even has a bit of arthritis." Alan Slater, 56, is an artist from Camden. "Ah yes, he looks creative."

Mick

Veronique is less than impressed with Mick. "He thinks it's a joke, but he needs to apply something to stop him biting his nails. He and Gordon Brown could be good friends."

Miran Muthiah

"A no-nonsense person, this," Veronique says of Miran Muthiah, who teaches business and ICT. "He's quite serious - the pose, the well-kept but short nails."

Dr Polly Spencer-Vellacott

"She doesn't take any nonsense either," says Veronique of Polly Spencer-Vellacott. "And neat nails - is she a head of nursing?" She's an ecologist. "Those hands have worked out in the fresh air."

Barbara Boothroyd

"She's in her 60s, and married for a long time - her ring is a bit tight," says Veronique. "She's a romantic, from the shade she's painted her nails." Barbara B responds: "Your expert was totally wrong."

David McArthur

"A young man, 18 to 25?" Veronique guesses from David McArthur's smooth skin. "With long fingers, he may play music, but his nails would be shorter." David, 24, is a research fellow who plays piano.

Tim Smith

"A short guy, but strong and he looks after his hands. Perhaps around 40?" says Veronique of Tim Smith. He's 36 and a scientific sales executive. "Why's he doing that instead of working?"

Vanessa Folks

"A busy woman," says Veronique. "She cooks - there's a burn - and her nails break as she only has time to cut them." Vanessa Folks, a mother, says she used to pick her cuticles but has started treatment.
