Child dies in farm accident

A child has been killed and two others injured in a farm accident in County Londonderry.

Police in Londonderry said the accident happened on a farm at Knockloughrim at about 1700 BST on Sunday.

Six-year-old Heather Louise Rainey, from Quarry Road in the village near Maghera, died when a wall collapsed on the three children at the farm.

A police spokesman said: "Police are investigating it on behalf of the coroner."

It is thought farm machinery was being operated in the area at the time.

The child was dead on arrival at Antrim Area Hospital.

A four-year-old boy and girl are in a satisfactory condition in hospital.

The family's minister, Reverend Noel Agnew, said the whole community was devastated by the tragedy.

"She was just a lovely wee girl - she had a smile that would have melted your heart," he said.

"When I heard yesterday afternoon I was just devastated. I still cannot take it in.

"Obviously, the family all feel exactly the same way. They just don't know what has hit them at all."

Acting principal at Knockloughrim Primary School Mrs McFaul said everyone was very shocked at what had happened.

"People just can't take it in," she said.

"She was a lovely little girl, a friendly happy little girl who was loved by everybody here."
