More than 30 firefighters tackled a major blaze overnight in disused industrial premises in West Lothian.

The fire broke out in a disused hatchery in Whitburn owned by Grampian Country Foods. Emergency services were alerted mid-evening on Thursday.

The building, which the company said had not been occupied for two years, was destroyed. No-one was hurt

Lothian and Borders Police and the fire brigade are continuing to investigate the cause.

Eyewitness Steven Bigham said the fire spread across the building over half an hour.

Another eyewitness, Lindsay Ellis, said: "I reached the scene at 9.20pm and the road was closed off. Six fire engines and police were all tackling the blaze.

One eyewitness said the roof of the building collapsed

"I stayed for an hour and heard a series of bangs, probably coming from the fridges that kept the chickens.

"The roof collapsed and the smoke just bellowed like a giant mushroom.

"What probably started as a small innocent fire has now resulted in the place burnt to the ground.

"The flames were even coming through the brickwork. Luckily there was no-one in the building."
