Teenager dies in ski accident

Skiing is a popular holiday activity in Andorra
A teenager from Greater Manchester has died on a family skiing holiday in Andorra.

Richard Cawley, 13, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, was killed after an accident on the slopes, a Foreign Office spokesman confirmed.

The boy, who attended Stockport Grammar School, is believed to have been very fond of sport and the outdoors.

The spokesman Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm that Richard Cawley, age 13, died on 11 February following a skiing accident in Andorra.

Rescuers praised

"We understand he was on holiday with his family and our consular staff are willing to provide any assistance required."

His father Andrew, a senior partner with accountancy firm KPMG in Manchester praised rescue workers who tried to save his son's life.

He said: "Richard was an outgoing, happy boy who enjoyed life to the full."

Christine Henstock, Stockport Grammar development officer, said school friends had been told of the tragedy.

She said: "The news was announced at a special assembly to the whole school.

"We have a chaplain attached to St George's Church, the Reverend Liz Leaver.

Pupils counselled

"She took the assembly for the lower school and led the school in remembrance of Richard and they observed a minute's silence.

"Richard's form were counselled separately so that they could grieve separately.

"Richard was a keen rugby player, and members of staff who taught rugby have been particularly touched by the tragedy."

Richard's body has been returned to the UK for a funeral service.

The tiny European principality of Andorra, sandwiched between Spain and France, is a popular winter holiday resort with UK visitors.
