Service for Bradford fire victims

Bradford fire memorial service

Bereaved relatives of people killed in the Bradford City fire disaster have paid their respects to those who died in a service in the city centre.

On 11 May 1985 fire swept through a stand at Valley Parade, costing the lives of 56 people.

The blaze left more than 200 people injured, many with serious burns.

On Sunday, civic leaders from Bradford and Lincoln - the club's opponents on that day - gathered at the memorial sculpture in Centenary Square.

A one-minute silence was held by the sculpture as flags were flown at half-mast and wreaths were laid at the memorial sculpture.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Robin Owens, said: "This is an incredibly important date for the people of Bradford and we must reflect and remember all those who were affected by this disaster."

Bradford MP Gerry Sutcliffe said:¿ It's been a tremendous turnout, not only for people from Bradford, but from Lincoln as well who were the other team involved on the day.

"What was impressive today was the broad range of people, the broad age groups of people, youngsters who know about the fire disaster because it had such an impact on all of our lives and the lives of people in this city."
