A man has drowned after diving into a reservoir to rescue his girlfriend's daughter from the water.
Andrew Smith, 34, died while trying to help Amy Nowell, 12, at Anglezarke Reservoir in Chorley, Lancashire, after she fell in from the bank.
The girl slipped when trying to catch a ball while playing with Mr Smith and her mother, Tricia Nowell.
Amy got herself out, but Mr Smith, of Atherton, Greater Manchester, got into difficulties.
Police, mountain rescue divers and the fire brigade were called out on Wednesday night.
Two hours later officers recovered Mr Smith's body from the water.
A report will be submitted to the coroner, police said.
Anglezarke reservoir is in an area a popular beauty spot with walkers. It provides water supplies for Wigan.
