Jane's family in marathon double

Mike and Jane Tomlinson

The widower and daughter of endurance athlete and fundraiser Jane Tomlinson have completed the London Marathon.

Mrs Tomlinson, of Rothwell, Leeds, died in September after a seven-year battle with cancer during which she raised millions of pounds for charity.

Her 46-year-old husband Mike and their daughter Rebecca, 20, ran Sunday's event in aid of Jane's Appeal, the charity which she set up.

Rebecca finished in 3 hours 45 minutes and her father in 4 hours 28 minutes.

The pair reckon they have raised about £20,000 towards the appeal.

Rebecca praised her mother for her fundraising work and said she was thinking of her as she ran.

"For the last mile mum was on my mind so I think that's really helped me"

She said: "I was aiming for four hours so 3.45 was better than I expected.

"The only thing I was worried about was losing to my dad but I've beaten him.

"The atmosphere was really great and everyone was cheering us on. For the last mile mum was on my mind so I think that's really helped me.

"I've always wanted to do a marathon but this year just seemed like the right year to do it. I think it really helped a lot for the charity.

"One of my thoughts was I don't know how she did an Iron Man triathlon because a marathon is just one part of that."

Before the race, Mr Tomlinson said: "Jane started the fundraising six years ago almost to the day here and we are carrying on in the same vein.

"It's hard to put into words the feelings for Jane. She was just the most astonishing person. She wanted to show people with terminal cancer can still get on and enjoy life."
