Man in court over Shiels murder

Emmett Shiels was shot dead in Creggan

An 18-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering Emmett Shiels in Londonderry last month.

Garry Meenan from Bishop's Street in the city is also accused of a number of related firearms offences.

A detective inspector told the court he believed the defendant did not fire the shots which killed Mr Shiels but was part of the gang which murdered him.

He said that during five days of questioning Mr Meenan consistently denied the charges.

He was remanded in custody at the hearing at Londonderry Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Emmett Shiels, 22, from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside, was shot in the Bligh's Lane area of Derry on 24 June.

He was driving a pizza delivery van when he was caught up in a confrontation with a group of masked gunmen.
