What the Scottish papers say

The SNP's historic victory in the Glasgow East by-election dominates the front pages, with the Scotsman and Press and Journal both describing how a jubilant Alex Salmond has warned Labour they no longer have any safe seats in Scotland.

A trade union leader tells the Herald that Prime Minister Gordon Brown could face a challenge for the Labour leadership this autumn in light of the party's "humiliating" defeat.

The Scottish Daily Mail says the knives are out for Mr Brown, with Labour facing an imminent leadership crisis, while the Scottish Daily Express says the prime minster has been "humiliated" by the ballot and is now fighting for his political life as once loyal colleagues turn on him.

The Times leads with the headline "Shape up in 2 months or go" alongside a claim that cabinet ministers have set the prime minster a deadline to regain the country's confidence or face a full-scale revolt.

But the Courier offers some consolation for Mr Brown with a report that senior ministers have rallied round him despite the by-election defeat.

Elsewhere, the Scottish Sun carries allegations about movie star Sean Bean.

And the Daily Record claims that Death Row Scot Kenny Richey was involved in an incident on a warehouse roof in Edinburgh.
