For years David James was a squad player behind David Seaman, but following the 2002 World Cup James has been England's first choice goalkeeper.
He stayed England's number one despite relegation with West Ham last season, but a move to Manchester City put him back in the Premiership.
James' size makes him an imposing figure and his shot-stopping and reflexes have always been excellent.
Even so, doubts will always remain about his judgement on coming for crosses and his occasional blunders, although these do seem to happen less often.
