published the first set of boxing rules in response to the death of an opponent,
Yorkshireman George Stevenson.
1930: The first British Empire Games opened in Hamilton, Canada. They became the British Commonwealth Games in 1970. 1948: Legendary baseball player Babe Ruth died on this day. 2000: Manchester United full-back Denis Irwin was carried off during his testimonial following a tackle by Manchester City's George Weah. |
