1948: British jockey Lester Piggott won his first horse race on board The Chase.

He rode to the first of many career victories in the Wigan Lane Selling Handicap at Haydock.

1990: The New Zealand All Blacks suffered their first defeat for nearly four years.

Arch rivals Australia did the honours, eclipsing the feared Kiwis 21-9 in Wellington to end a run of 23 consecutive wins.

2000: Blackburn Rovers owner Jack Walker died, aged 70.
