Pole vaulter Buckfield to retire

Nick Buckfield
Buckfield finished fifth at the 1997 World Championships

Crawley pole vaulter Nick Buckfield has confirmed his retirement from the sport at the end of the year.

A persistent hamstring problem meant he could not compete at the Olympic trials and he will now move into coaching.

The 35-year-old British record holder told BBC Southern Counties Radio: "I can't perform at the level I want when I'm carrying an injury.

"I'm going to be coaching a few people including Andy Marsh, who came fifth in the world juniors."
