After much deliberation, staff at the BBC Sport website have come up with their top-10 British fighters, pound-for-pound.
Ignoring weight, this subjective list takes into account fighters' recent results, their skills, resilience and punching power.
The list will be updated periodically and should be treated as a talking point. Let the debate begin!
POUND-FOR-POUND TOP 10
1. Joe Calzaghe - Super-middleweight Newbridge (45-0, 32KOs) Calzaghe outpointed Bernard Hopkins on his US and light-heavyweight debut and may now face Roy Jones Jr in Las Vegas in the autumn. Britain's greatest ever boxer?
2. Ricky Hatton - Light-welterweight Manchester (44-1, 31KOs) Hatton defeated tough Mexican Juan Lazcano in his first fight since losing to Floyd Mayweather and should have enough to beat IBF champion Paul Malignaggi in the autumn.
3. David Haye - Heavyweight London (21-1, 20KOs) Haye destroyed Enzo Maccarinelli to become undisputed cruiserweight king and is now targeting two-belt heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2009
4. Carl Froch - Super-middleweight Nottingham (23-0, 19KOs) Froch beat Poland's late replacement Albert Rybacki in Nottingham after Denis Inkin's withdrawal and could land the WBC title later this year.
5. Junior Witter - Light-welterweight Bradford (36-2-2, 21KOs) Witter was woeful in losing his WBC crown to Timothy Bradley - his dream fight with Ricky Hatton looks like it will now never happen.
6. Clinton Woods - Light-heavyweight Sheffield (41-4-1, 24KOs) Woods looked a spent force in losing to Antonio Tarver, although his camp claims he was suffering from a strain of meningitis and he may fight on.
7. Enzo Maccarinelli - Cruiserweight Swansea (28-2, 21KOs) There are still plenty of options for Big Mac despite his emphatic loss to Haye at London's O2. Look for the Welshman to bounce back in style.
8. Alex Arthur - Super-featherweight Edinburgh (25-1, 19KOs) Arthur was awarded the full WBO belt after champion Joan Guzman stepped up a weight. Promoter Frank Warren will want a straight-forward first defence.
9. Amir Khan - Lightweight Bolton (18-0, 14KOs) Khan was give a torrid time by Michael Gomez and questions remain about both his defence and his chin. Clearly not ready for a world title tilt yet.
10. Nicky Cook - Featherweight Dagenham (26-1, 15KOs) Cook was outclassed by Steve Luevano in challenging for the WBO belt in 2007, but got back to winning ways with an easy win over Kirkor Kirkorov in February.
