John Duddy was bloodied during Saturday's bout in New York

John Duddy had to battle very hard before earning a bloody 10-round majority win over Tunisia journeyman Walid Smichet in New York.

One judge scored the middleweight bout a draw while the other two gave the Northern Ireland man a 98-92 verdict.

Duddy picked up cuts to both eyes in the contest at Madison Square Garden and his mooted world title fight with Kelly Pavlik may have to be delayed.

The bout had been tentatively pencilled in for 7 June in New York.

Pavlik's promoter Bob Arum indicated that the fight is still to likely take place towards the end of 2008.

"We'll make that fight later in the year," added Arum, indicating Pavlik (33-0) might face another challenger before risking his WBC and WBO titles against the Irishman.

Unbeaten Duddy was pounded by right-hand leads and left hooks from Smichet during the early rounds that left him bleeding from both sides of his face before taking control from the sixth round with a jolting left jab.

Duddy's win improved his record to 24 straight wins while Smichet suffered his fourth defeat in 24 bouts.

"I'm disappointed with the performance (but) I'm glad I squeaked out a win," said 28-year-old Duddy after the bout.

The opening five rounds were a brawl, as neither fighter offered much defense.

Duddy stalked Smichet but was an easy target for overhand rights and lefts from the counter-puncher.

"I should have knocked him out in the first or second round," said a disappointed Smichet, who believed he had won.

"Look at my face and look at his and you tell me who won.

"It was close but I thought I had the edge over him."

After his early onslaught, the Tunisian grew arm-weary and the fitter Duddy took over and used his boxing skills to post the victory.
