Maynard was disappointed by Glamorgan's defeat at Durham

Glamorgan boss Matthew Maynard has pointed the finger at the club's senior players in the wake of their Twenty20 Cup disappointment at Durham.

The hosts won by 44 runs on Tuesday night, prompting Maynard's outburst.

He said: "Our senior players aren't quite pulling their weight at the moment as you want senior players to."

Captain David Hemp and batsman Mike Powell failed to reach double figures at Riverside as Glamorgan failed to better Durham's total of 163-8.

"It's just a sad fact of where we are at the club at the moment," added Maynard.

"But I honestly believe I don't think it's going to take much to turn it around."

Maynard's confidence in Glamorgan's potential is based on his belief that in a defeat such as that suffered at Chester-le-Street, the match could have turned out very differently.

"I honestly believe it," insisted Maynard. "It's only little percentages here and there.

"Had we restricted Durham to 140 or 145, which we could quite easily have done with three overs to go, you are looking at a different game.

"I thought we fought really well in the field and put in a really good performance.

"When you're chasing what is perhaps an average target of 160 you need a solid start and we didn't get that.

"We were 20 for three and behind the eight-ball. I was quite pleased with the way Jamie Dalrymple and Tom Maynard tried to build it back together before an unfortunate run-out.

"Then Mark Wallace came in and gave it a go.

"But against their bowling attack we had to bat and keep wickets in hand and we didn't."

Maynard says Durham have shown how success can be achieved - by taking a long-term approach to development.

"Durham are a very good side," said Maynard. "They've got a good system with a nice mixture between young local players and experienced players from overseas.

"You have to take your hat off to what they've achieved. It's taken them a while, but they now look a very strong outfit."
