Hemp agrees with county criticism

David Hemp
David Hemp says he has sympathy with Matthew Maynard's criticism

Glamorgan captain David Hemp has backed Matthew Maynard's criticism of senior players following Tuesday's Twenty20 Cup defeat against Durham.

Maynard, the county's cricket manager, said his senior players were not pulling their weight in the wake of the 44-run reversal at Chester-le-Street.

"You can't disagree. The senior players are there for a reason and that's to win you games," said Hemp.

"And on Tuesday night we didn't step up to the mark."

Hemp added: "You get that reputation as a senior player and you are expected to win games."

606: DEBATE
Hemp will lead Glamorgan Dragons into Thursday's opening NatWest Pro40 League game against Surrey Brown Caps under the Swalec Stadium floodlights.

But he is set to miss his side's next two matches against Essex and Kent because of commitments with Bermuda, who are playing a Twenty20 World Cup qualifying tournament in Belfast.

"Under ICC rules if I'm playing international cricket I have to play,'' explained Hemp.

"The only reason I wouldn't be able to play would be if I retired from international cricket which I don't want to do at this present stage.

"In April I had a discussion with the club about me playing and Matthew was quite happy for me to do that. He thought it was good PR for the club.''

Bermuda play in the Belfast tournament between 2 and 5 August along with Canada, Ireland, Kenya, the Netherlands and Scotland.
