York City have signed striker Daniel McBreen for the forthcoming season.

The 31-year-old Australian scored twice in five appearances for City last season while on loan from Scunthorpe.

York manager Colin Walker told BBC Radio York: "When you're making a list at the end of the season his name was always on it.

"I think he wants a fresh challenge and I think the challenge of trying to help York City get back into the Football League appealed to him."

Walker added: "He's got that Australian mentality, which is a winning mentality, and a work ethos which is very, very good. I'm sure he'll bring that to the rest of the squad."

When he told me he was interested in coming back to City, obviously straight away I wanted to get it done

McBreen spent time on loan at St Johnstone after leaving York last season, but Walker said he was determined to bring him back to KitKat Crescent.

"I must have spent five weeks trying to get hold of him but I didn't realise he'd gone back to Australia," said Walker.

"He eventually got back in touch with me and when he told me he was interested in coming back to City, obviously straight away I wanted to get it done."

Walker and chairman Jason McGill spent several weeks negotiating with McBreen and the manager said help from the club's board was vital.

"I've been very lucky with the board," he added. "There was a big chance that we may not have got McBreen but the board came to the party and I'm really pleased. I've got to really thank the board for helping me."
