FA chairman Lord Triesman makes Wembley pitch promise

Lord Triesman happy with England World Cup bid

The Football Association has promised that Wembley will never again suffer from a poor playing surface.

Wembley is the centrepiece for England's 2018 World Cup bid but the quality of the pitch was criticised following the FA Cup semi-finals.

"We shouldn't have let this happen and we will have an exceptional pitch," said FA chairman Lord Triesman ahead of Saturday's FA Cup final.

"We should never let the lesson slip and we won't."

Wembley's pitch, which has been relaid for 11th time since 2007 for the FA Cup final, is more than 100ft below the top of the stands, which means it is shielded from the sun and wind.

Triesman believes that the "microclimate" of the £750m stadium caused problems in the quality of the surface.

He added: "For quite a long period during the season we got the pitch to be a good pitch.

"England coach Fabio Capello and everybody else commented that it was a very good playing surface.

"There's no doubt in my mind that one way or another, whether it was the way it was being maintained or whatever, it slipped backwards.

"But we know how to get a good pitch there and I think people in the international community know that we can and we did.

"Whatever the peculiarities of the microclimate there we can do it, we did do it and we will do it again."

"It is still a relatively new stadium, it has a very peculiar microclimate but we have got the stadium as it is, and we know how to get it to a really good playing surface."

Last month, Wembley's operators refused to put a figure on how often the stadium's pitch will be relaid.

However, it was learnt that the surface would be changed up to seven times a year until at least 2023.

In addition to showpiece football matches and rugby union club games, Wembley also stages rugby league's Challenge Cup final, NFL games, music concerts and has even hosted motorsport events in the past - around a dozen non-football events a year.
