Champions League trophy
The Champions League trophy, currently held by Etoile du Sahel

The Champions League is Africa's premier continental club competition organised annually by the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Between January and November it pitches up to 64 clubs, including winners and some runners up of Caf affiliated leagues, against each other.

The event operates as a knockout from the first round, culminating in a two-legged final with a US$1m prize for the winner.

Egypt's Al Ahly and Zamalek have both won the event a record five times but the current holders are Tunisia's Etoile du Sahel.

Whichever teams triumphs in the Champions League also automatically qualifies for the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan.
