Giggs achieves European milestone
Ryan Giggs
Giggs has won more trophies than any player in Man Utd's history

Sir Alex Ferguson has saluted Ryan Giggs' professionalism ahead of the winger's 100th Champions League tie for Manchester United in Lyon on Wednesday.

Giggs, 34, was named in United's side, becoming the eighth player to reach the mark, after his 1994 tournament debut.

"That is because of his ability, his longevity and how he prepares himself - a good lifestyle," said boss Ferguson.

"He has been an absolute model in his time with us. It'll be a great occasion for Ryan and we are all proud of him."

Giggs has chalked up a staggering 745 appearances and scored 143 goals since his debut for United almost 17 years ago.

He has won a remarkable 15 major trophies with the club during that time, including the Champions League in 1999.

And Ferguson believes more glory will come the former Wales international's way if Giggs continues to manage his body carefully.

"Even at 34, we expect big things from him," added Ferguson. "Obviously, we don't play him in every game but that's natural for someone of that age.

"We want to play him in games that really matter to our club. The Champions League, to me, represents the biggest challenge in football.

"Footballers with real vision and real purpose in life always want to play in the biggest tournaments and Ryan has always reserved his best performances for the big occasions.

"When players are asked to be challenged in a big way, it is in European football.

"The great nights and atmosphere at Old Trafford can only happen because the right type of players are playing on that stage and Ryan has produced many great moments for us."
