"John Terry's penalty miss was reminiscent of David Beckham's against Turkey. He went up to take the spot-kick but slipped and put the ball wide.

"It's especially hard on Terry because for so long he has been the vanguard of the Chelsea side.

"But congratulations to Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson. Pound-for-pound they were the best side in Europe this season. It is lovely to see a team win the domestic crown then go on to win the biggest title in Europe.

"I have the feeling Sir Alex may get up in the morning and now think about attacking Liverpool's record of 18 league titles - they have 17 already.

"There were some poignant moments for me during the match. But the most memorable came after the game when United legend Sir Bobby Charlton came over to match captain Rio Ferdinand to tell him to savour the moment - these occasions don't come around too often.

"Another great moment was watching Paul Scholes pick up a winners' medal. He missed out in 1999 because of suspension and maybe he thought this day would never come.

"He's one of the best English players of his generation.

"And as for Cristiano Ronaldo, there is no need for him to leave United. He won't get it better anywhere else than at Old Trafford.

"This is what players play football for. They will have a wonderful time celebrating."

"It was a tough game.

"When it comes to penalties there is a hero and there is a villain. The match had great tension and excitement and at the of the day it was Manchester United who came away with the trophy.

"Manager Sir Alex Ferguson retire? He isn't going to stop now. In fact, when will he stop?

"His side have now won two European Cups with virtually the last action of the match on each occasion.

"The first time it was Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's goal and this time it was with the save of Edwin van der Sar."
