2142: Speaking of frustrating evenings, I have had one as well. After the excitement and enjoyment of last night's goalfest, tonight our servers stopped working and we have not been able to post any updates for the last three hours. Still, at least there have been plenty more goals - 17 in total, which is not a patch on the 36 we saw on Tuesday but still a decent effort. And your banter on 606 and via text on 81111 has kept me going through it all. Thanks for your comments and see you all soon.

2139: So, Chelsea triumph after a frustrating night against Roma and Liverpool are held after what looked like it would be a famous night against Atletico. Both sides are still well-placed to reach the knockout stages, however.

2135: Full time across Europe - it has been a great night for Barcelona but not such a good one for Roger Federer, who was at St Jacob-Park to see his hometown team humbled by the Catalans.

Seconds before full-time in France, CFR Cluj's Eugen Trica is sent off. It has not been a great night for him, or his team.

2128: Chances at either end in Madrid. First, Atletico's Miguel sees a bouncing volley saved by Pepe Reina before Ryan Babel somehow heads wide from Dirk Kuyt's cross with the goal gaping. How did he miss that?

Hugo Almeida's scored in the 83rd minute. It looks set to salvage a point for the German side.

It looks like PSV are going to get their first points in Group D. Danny Koevermans has just scored his second of the night.

Atletico have an equaliser. Jamie Carragher fails to deal with a long ball and Liverpool are punished. Diego Forlan finds Simao, who fires a precise low shot past Pepe Reina and into the bottom corner of the net.

2121: A bit of a tangle involving John Terry's elbows holds up play as Frank Lampard prepares to take a free-kick. It is worth waiting for, though, as Lampard fires in a fierce shot that is tipped over by Doni.

2121: "Maybe Roger Federer should come on for Basle. He cant be any worse than this lot. Of course his volleys are a sight to behold."

Poor old Basle are getting a pasting.

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu says his side's back-to-back games against Sporting will decide who follows Barca out of Group C. At the moment it looks like that will be Da Silva Liedson, who has just put Sporting ahead.

It looked as if Roma would go the distance and leave with a point but John Terry has other ideas. He rises at the near post to meet a Frank Lampard corner and heads home majestically. The England defender is hurt in the process but is soon back on his feet.

Looks like Werder's dismal away run will continue. Vangelis Mantzios has just scored his second goal of the game for the Greeks.

Both these sides are without a win at the bottom of Group D and in desperate need of a victory. PSV are looking good for that now, however, as Danny Koevermans has fired them into the lead with just 19 minutes left.

2109: It is just not happening for Chelsea at the moment. Frank Lampard drills in a free-kick from 30 yards but fires the ball straight at the wall.

2108: Not much happening in Madrid...Liverpool seem to have taken the sting out of that game in the second half.

2107: John Mikel Obi has a pop for Chelsea from the edge of the box but the ball hits Nicolas Anelka and flies wide.

2105: Salomon Kalou goes down in the Roma area after tangling with Daniele De Rossi. No penalty though - closer inspection reveals the Chelsea striker actually tripped over his own feet.

2103: "Steven Gerrard being called ashore. Rafa Benitez clearly looking to the big game on Sunday."

Liverpool play Chelsea at the weekend for those of you who didn't know already...

2100: Chelsea force a good save from Doni through Salomon Kalou's header from Frank Lampard's free-kick - it was straight at him though. In Madrid, Liverpool bring on Ryan Babel for Steven Gerrard.

2059: GOAL BORDEAUX 1-0 CFR Cluj
Cluj are unbeaten in Group A so far but they have work to do now in France as Ricardo Cadu has just put through his own net.

2058: And the Spanish side go close again as Simao's shot is touched on to the post by Pepe Reina. The ball bounces straight back to the Liverpool goalkeeper.

2056: It is Atletico's turn to put the ball into the net but see it ruled out for offside. Diego Forlan sets up Maniche, who fires home only to be denied by the linesman flag. He looked onside to be fair.

2054: Salomon Kalou tries to feed Nicolas Anelka in the area but he puts too much on his pass and the ball runs through to Doni.

2052: A bit of pressure from Chelsea for the first time in this half but Roma, as they were before the break, are holding out. Liverpool make a change - Dirk Kuyt is on for Robbie Keane, who has a groin injury.

2050: Yossi Benayoun puts the ball in the net for Liverpool after a neat turn and shot but his strike is ruled out for offside.

Easy-street for Barca as Xavi blasts ball into net from edge of box after great work from Alex Hleb on the left.

Basle have brought on Olivier Stockli as they search for a miracle in the second half but instead they fall further behind. Bojan Krkic races clear and produces a cool finish to slot into the bottom corner.

2045: We have started the second half in Madrid too. You guessed it, Sergio Aguero is on for Atletico, replacing Luis Garcia.

2044: Chelsea have got the second half under way at Stamford Bridge. Juliano Belletti is on for Florent Malouda.

2041: Just a reminder that server problems mean our live text commentary is not updating on the main site...I will keep posting on 606 in the meantime however.

2038: "Why, oh why, is the server not working? How am I going to get through the night doing my coursework when my thoughts are on the game. Please help me (You can help me with my coursework as well if you want)."

Fair to say that Roma are keeping it tight.

2031: Half-time all around Europe. By this time last night we had seen 20 Champions League goals fly in but only seven have been scored tonight. C'mon guys, pull your socks up.

Robbie Keane's goal gives Liverpool a half-time lead and Rafa Benitez's men are well on top in Madrid.

Roma are defending deep and keeping Chelsea at bay so far.

Adriano heads the Nerazzurri ahead at the San Siro. Inter are top of Serie A and everything is going well for them at the moment.

2026: Chelsea feel aggrieved when the referee gives an advantage for a foul on Deco on the edge of the Roma area, seconds before the Blues lose possession. Trust me when I say that John Terry was not a happy chappy. Roma still defending in depth.

2025: At long last, an effort on goal by Atletico Madrid. It's Diego Forlan who goes close, sending a left-foot shot fizzing across the face of goal.

Maybe Werder Bremen are going to have to wait a little longer to improve on their woeful away form. Vangelis Mantzios has just equalised for the Greek side.

2022: A deft touch by Francesco Totti sets up Roma's best chance of the night. Totti finds Matteo Brighi with a delicate pass on the edge of the area but John Terry gets across with a brilliant challenge to block the shot.

2020: "This is turning into a training session for Liverpool, The quality of our English sides in the Champions League is doing our nation proud."
Darrell Allen via text on 81111

2018: Cicinho is the latest Roma player to try his luck from long range. Petr Cech was not tested by that one either.

Werder Bremen have won only one of their last 12 away games in the Champions League but they are ahead in Greece as Per Mertesacker has just notched.

2014: Atletico still yet to create a chance at the Vicente Calderon. Maybe we might see Sergio Aguero a bit earlier than we thought?

2013: Roma are having plenty of possession but not doing a lot with it. Chelsea are getting forward when they can but short of ideas of how to break down the Italians despite a lot of hard work by Florent Malouda.

2012: "Early doors in the Pool game but I reckon we could get a few goals here tonight. we look OK and Atletico's confidence is shot at the moment. Great start."

2010: Chances for Chelsea and Liverpool. In London, Frank Lampard goes close for the Blues from a Deco free-kick, clipping the top of the bar with a pile-driver of a shot. In Madrid, Robbie Keane tries to be a bit too cute in front of goal from a Steven Gerrard cross and his attempted flick fails to come off. Shame.

It is turning into a rout for Barca - Bojan Krkic has just planted a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner of the net.

2006: Liverpool are completely dominant at the moment in Madrid and, if anything look like extending their lead. Xabi Alonso has a go at doing just that but sees his shot fly just over.

2004: Roma are packing the midfield at Stamford Bridge and making things very difficult for Chelsea at the moment.

2002: Another long-range effort from Daniele De Rossi, this time from a free-kick. This one also flies harmlessly wide. Give John Arne Riise a go...

The goals keep coming in Switzerland. Confusion in the Basle defence and Sergio Busquets finds space on the right-hand side of the area to slip the ball home. Maybe 40 goals tonight is a realistic target?

Or did I speak too soon? A searching pass by Steven Gerrard sets Robbie Keane free and he slides the ball past Leo Franco and into the net.

1956: A scrappy start in Madrid - no chances for Atletico or Liverpool yet.

1954: "Any chance of the live update being updated please!?"
ChelseaCharlie via text on 81111

I wish I could help ChelseaCharlie, I really do...

1952: And a first shot on goal from the Blues follows shortly afterwards. A clearance falls for Frank Lampard on the edge of the box but his curling shot is caught by Doni.

1950: A first piece of decent possession from Chelsea in the Roma half but the attack peters out when Florent Malouda fails to control the ball.

That's more like it. Barca are ahead in Switzerland - Lionel Messi latches on to a lovely pass from Daniel Alves and finishes with aplomb. Nice.

1947: First effort on goal from Roma is a long-range effort from Daniele De Rossi that bobbles hopelessly wide. C'mon guys - we won't break the 36-goal mark with shots like that.

1946: No goals anywhere around Europe tonight yet. The Champions League is so boring these days...

1945: We are under way in Madrid and at Stamford Bridge.

1944: Atletico fans are booing the Uefa Champions League anthem...presumably because of the punishment handed out by European football's governing body that put the venue of this match in doubt.
Uefa lifts home ban on Atletico

1942: The Chelsea and Roma players are out on the are Atletico Madrid and Liverpool at the Vicente Calderon Stadium. Not long to go now folks.

1940: Chelsea fans arriving at Stamford Bridge tonight were greeted by a free scarf waiting for them on their seat. A nice touch from Roman Abramovich that - I can vouch for it being a cold night in west London and the credit crunch is also beginning to bite.

1937: "Roma are in dire form in Serie A even with Totti back from injury. They got hammered at home 4-0 by Inter on Sunday and I expect a similar scoreline tonight."

Now, now. This is the Champions League - every game is massive. Isn't it?

1932: Just to clear up that, although Atletico's prolific Argentine striker Sergio Aguero is on the bench, despite suffering from 'muscular injuries caused by tiredness'. Let's hope we see him later on then.

1930: "Talking to you from Down Under. Haven't been to bed.Chelsea to Win 4-0 and Liverpool to lose 2-1."

1928: "Unbelievable. Dirk Kuyt has been absolutely rubbish for two years and never gets dropped. The moment he hits a purple patch hes on the bench for the other donkey Benayoun. Just when I was starting to think Rafa was getting it right."

1916: A big ask for Roma to come away from their visit to west London with anything to show for it. Chelsea are flying, and even playing some good football too. Luiz Felipe Scolari's side are up against a familiar face in John Arne Riise tonight - will the Norwegian score at the right end this time?
Riise hopes to thrive with Roma

1914: "Chelsea to beat Roma tonight. The Italian teams have assumed the position the English clubs had a few years ago in the Champions League; a few big name players, capable of winning one off games but, ultimately, not good enough to win the competition."

1907: Chelsea make three changes to the team that hammered Middlesbrough at the weekend. Goalkeeper Petr Cech and centre-back Ricardo Carvalho are back after injuries, while midfielder Deco gets his first start since September.

Cech, Bosingwa, Terry, Carvalho, Bridge, Kalou, Lampard, Mikel, Malouda, Deco, Anelka. Subs: Cudicini, Ivanovic, Di Santo, Ferreira, Alex, Belletti, Stoch.

1903: Dirk Kuyt is surprisingly dropped to the bench by Liverpool, with Javier Mascherano returning in midfield after a calf injury. Yossi Benayoun comes in for Jermaine Pennant from the side that beat Wigan, with Robbie Keane likely to play as a lone front man.

Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Agger, Dossena, Mascherano, Alonso, Benayoun, Gerrard, Riera, Keane. Subs: Cavalieri, Aurelio, Pennant, Kuyt, Babel, Leiva Lucas, Darby.

1858: I'm not going to predict any actual results tonight - just the number of goals. My guess is 22. Not all in one game though as Villarreal are not playing.

I kind of want the same thing but for reasons of my sanity, maybe a few less...

1849: Liverpool and Atletico are sitting pretty at the top of Group D with 100% records so far...A tiny bit of the edge has been taken off this one by the absence through injury of Fernando 'goal machine' Torres and Sergio 'also prolific' Aguero but a win for either side would all-but guarantee qualification for the knockout stages so, er, expect fireworks.
New and improved Forlan to test Liverpool

1845: Hello again, goal fans. Last night was incredible wasn't it? So little defending was going on that it seemed as if Ossie Ardiles had taken charge at every Champions League club.

Now, I can't guarantee you as many crazy scorelines as we got on Tuesday evening but I can promise you the thrills and spills of eight more cracking ties tonight from 1945 BST. Among the treats in store for you lucky, lucky people are Chelsea's clash with Roma at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool's trip to the Vicente Calderon Stadium to take on Atletico Madrid and surprise package Anorthosis Famagusta's clash with Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan at the San Siro. Enjoy.
