Nicky Butt and Hull's Geovanni battle for the ball
Newcastle earned an FA Cup third-round replay after holding Hull to a goalless draw at the KC Stadium.
The match was short of quality, with Hull coming close in the first half when Newcastle keeper Shay Given tipped a Daniel Cousin effort on to the post.
Hull also hit the woodwork when Michael Turner's effort came off the bar and post and fell into the hands of Given.
Newcastle striker Michael Owen lifted one shot wide and saw another strike deflected just past the Hull upright.
The England striker also fired over after a good knock-down from midfielder Nicky Butt.
Given, who this week has been linked with a move away from St James' Park, underlined his importance to the Magpies with another save from former Rangers forward Cousin.
The Republic of Ireland keeper also blocked a Sam Ricketts shot and brilliantly stopped a curling Geovanni free-kick from giving Hull the advantage.
The replay at St James' Park is on Wednesday 14 January.
Hull boss Phil Brown: "Both sides endeavoured to win the game, no doubt about it.
"I am pleased with the performance. It is getting the balance right between entertaining, winning football and that clean-sheet mentality.
"In the last two games we have got back to that ugly side of the game."
Newcastle assistant Chris Hughton: "I think given the fact that we are the away side coming here, probably we edged it, certainly on scoring chances.
"We are probably more aggrieved we didn't come away with the win.
"But they are a very good side and showed they have a good squad. It was a typical cup tie."
