Derby 1-1 Nottm Forest

Rob Hulse scores Derby's opening goal
Hulse opened the scoring in an enthralling cup tie at Pride Park

A fiery East Midlands derby ended in a draw after an enthralling FA Cup fourth round encounter at Pride Park.

Derby took the lead on 35 minutes when Rob Hulse slotted in Paul Connolly's cross, smartly dummied by Paul Green.

But Forest levelled on 64 minutes when Nathan Tyson's dummy allowed Robert Earnshaw to finish from eight yards.

Forest had keeper Paul Smith to thank for keeping the scores level, producing two fine saves to deny Hulse and Luke Varney in the final five minutes.

The replay will take place on 4 February at the City Ground, a match which will see former Forest favourite Nigel Clough travel along the Brian Clough Way to the City Ground for the first time since becoming Derby County boss.

Clough made four changes from the side that lost to Manchester United in the Carling Cup on Tuesday, with Robbie Savage taking his place in centre midfield, while Giles Barnes started ahead of Kris Commons.

Forest made just one change from the side that beat Plymouth, with Joel Lynch coming in for Wes Morgan.

A feisty first half saw plenty of aggressive challenges as both sides attempted to control the early tempo, but neither side created any clear-cut chances.

Nacer Barazite was a constant threat on the right flank and the Dutchman was involved in Derby's goal, sending through Connolly to cross for Hulse, who took advantage of confusion in the Forest box after Green's dummy to fire past Paul Smith.

But David Kelly - in the Forest hotseat because of the absence of Billy Davies - gave his side a rousing half-time team-talk as his side began the second half with vigour.

And the equaliser bore an uncanny resemblance to Derby's opener.

Substitute Garath McCleary's right-flank cross found Tyson, who cleverly dummied the ball for striker partner Earnshaw, who smartly finished with his left foot on the turn from eight yards on 64 minutes against his former club.

A horrific injury to Paul Anderson delayed the game by six minutes after the midfielder was taken off the field on a stretcher with a suspected broken arm.

The stoppage had a positive effect on Derby, who pushed forward in search of the winner.

Substitute Commons - who replaced Gary Teale - stung the palms of Smith with a 20-yard drive in the 81st minute.

And the Forest keeper ensured his side were level at the final whistle when he saved Hulse's glancing header before palming away Varney's effort 30 seconds later.

Derby boss Nigel Clough:
"It was a cracking cup tie, but I'm frustrated we didn't defend our lead better.

"Kris Commons had a great chance when he came on and the two headers - we could have walked away with a 2-1 win.

"But he (Forest keeper Paul Smith) made two very good saves at the end. We would rather replay than be out."

Nottingham Forest assistant manager David Kelly:
"We put in a super performance in the second half and we thoroughly deserved a draw," said Kelly.

"Earnie has done great of late, he's a real 'fox in the box' at the moment. To come back to your old club, you always want to do well.

"He and (Nathan) Tyson worked really hard, in defence as well as attack."
