England's arduous campaign has brought back memories of the last time the national side failed to qualify for a major tournament - the 1994 World Cup.
Under then manager Graham Taylor, England were in the same group as Holland, Norway, Poland, Turkey and San Marino.
They needed to avoid defeat against Holland in Rotterdam to boost their chances of getting through, but Ronald Koeman was not sent off for his professional foul on David Platt (left) and the Dutch went on to win the game 2-0.
England had to watch events from the USA on TV and it took Taylor years to rebuild his reputation.
