Artell was the hero for Morecambe
|
David Artell scored on 84 minutes to earn League Two's Morecambe a shock win over Preston and send the Championship side crashing out of the Carling Cup.
Preston keeper Wayne Henderson failed to hold on to a long free-kick from Adam Yates and Artell was on hand to poke home from close range.
Skipper Jim Bentley gave Morecambe the lead with a firm right-footed volley.
Danny Pugh headed in the equaliser for Preston after he met Karl Hawley's cross at the back post.
The Preston players were poor in the first half and were booed by the home support when they came off for the interval, but they moved up the gears after the break.
Preston's Sean St Ledger headed over from a Kevin Nicholls free-kick before Hawley's 20-yard strike was tipped over by Joe Lewis.
But they were left to rue not making the most of their few clear-cut chances when Artell capitalised of Henderson's mistake.
Morecambe's victory came in their first League cup tie and it was their first competitive win over their neighbours.
