Hamilton right-back Tony Stevenson inspired Accies to victory and edge them closer to the title.
The teenager scored direct from a corner in the fifth-minute and he proved a thorn in the side of the St Johnstone defence throughout the game.
Stevenson's free-kick in the 56th minute was despatched by David Elbert.
Goran Stanic thought he had cleared off the line but referee Dougie McDonald awarded a goal on the advice of his assistant Raymond White.
Rocco Quinn shot wide and Liam Craig's effort was charged down by goalkeeper Thomas Cerny late on as Hamilton retained their unbeaten home record and four-point cushion over Dundee at the top.
