Sheringham is doubtful for finale

Teddy Sheringham
Sheringham had planned to make his final appearance at Scunthorpe

Teddy Sheringham's career could be over a week earlier than he planned.

The former England striker was due to bring down the curtain for Colchester at Scunthorpe on Sunday.

The 42-year-old played for the U's at home to Stoke last weekend as Colchester waved goodbye to Layer Road before they move to their new stadium.

Manager Geraint Williams told BBC Essex: "It looks like Teddy won't make it for Sunday as his foot is very sore and he hasn't been able to train."

Sheringham signed for Colchester at the start of the season but has been powerless to prevent their relegation to League One.

The great thing for Teddy is he has been able to call time when he wants to

Injury kept him sidelined for a large part of the season but he did manage four goals, the last of which was a penalty against Peterborough in the FA Cup.

Sheringham has not yet decided whether he will go into coaching or management and has recently been playing in poker tournaments as well as watching his son Charlie play for Cambridge City.

Williams said: "It's sad when a career comes to an end but there are many players who have their's cut short by injury or don't get a contract.

"The good thing for Teddy is he's called time when he wants to and has had a fantastic career."
