"Stan and Ronnie are very experienced and it's exciting to be part of their plans to take the club forward."

Docherty, who is the eldest son of former Manchester United and Chelsea manager Tommy, was also Jepson's assistant at Gillingham before having a spell as caretaker boss.

His playing career included spells at Burnley, Manchester City and Sunderland, he also had a brief spell as manager of Hartlepool United.
