Peterborough United winger Chris Whelpdale has signed a four-year contract after a successful first season at London Road.

The 21-year-old has been a regular in Posh's first team since joining from Billericay at the end of last season.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "After getting promoted at the weekend, a new contract tops it off.

"I never expected to play so many games this year coming from non-league but the gaffer has confidence in me."

Whelpdale hopes there are exciting times ahead at Posh with a youthful team eager for success.

I want the League One title and I want to go to Wembley

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony

"The key to our team getting promoted is that we have such a young and enthusiastic team who want to go places in their careers.

"This could be the starting point to lead Peterborough to the higher leagues.

"It's so good to play with the likes of [George] Boyd and [Aaron] Mclean in training, and seeing them perform and get better helps me improve."

Meanwhile, Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony has called on the players to win their division next season.

"I want the League One title," he said. "And I want to go to Wembley so I want the Johnstone Paint Trophy too."
