Former Wales boss Bobby Gould has been appointed as Weymouth's new manager.

The 62-year-old has not had a managerial role since leaving Cheltenham in 2003 and replaces Alan Lewer who was sacked on Saturday.

Weymouth are currently in the Blue Square Premier relegation zone following Saturday's 1-0 defeat by already-relegated Lewes.

The Terras have lost 11 games in a row and have five games left to ensure their survival.

Gould, who managed Wimbledon's 1988 FA Cup-winning side, has also managed Bristol Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, Coventry and Cardiff and had a spell on the coaching staff at Peterborough before leaving in 2004.

He was appointed as Wales manager in 1995 but quit four years later after their Euro 2000 qualification campaign began badly.

Weymouth suffered a cash crisis earlier this season which caused many established players to walk out over unpaid wages.

The run of 11 defeats included a 9-0 home thrashing by Rushden & Diamonds as the Terras were forced to field a virtual youth team.

Former chairman Ian Ridley returned to the club in March as part of a new consortium which took over the club - but admitted that the Wessex Stadium outfit were likely to go part-time next season.

Former Forest Green Rovers manager Lewer had been in charge of team affairs since John Hollins was sacked in November.
