Is it possible for a team to be so amiss and still win the cup ? I don't think England played badly but finishing was atrocious. Better, with some concerns. Difficult to really shine against a side that is determined to defend. ENGLAND GET YOUR SHOOTING BOOTS ON. Should have been 4-0.

1759: Infojames
Looking like the new Greece. Good or bad?

1757: Ozvillain
If we can stumble through the quarter final, like we have the rest of this tournament, tben we can probably lose to argentina in the finals. I reckon we can take Brazil as they're playing appallingly, but will make the semis, as well!

1756: Mrhedhed
Well done England. To all the so-called supporters who moan about Sven's tactics, boring play or whatever, remember that we're in the world cup to win matches, not friends, and that's what we are doing. The results justify the means. Bring on the next opponents!

1754: Ryan
Ecuador it has to be said were very poor and showed little positive intent even when they went behind. Of the 2 teams England deserve to progress however poorly they played

1752: Electric_fish_cake
Thank goodness we played Ecudor, if it was Mexico we would be packing our bags tonight.

1747: Roakey
Lennon is doing it, why does everyone but Sven know this? Lennon could of been the player of the tourny.

1744: Bluevaio
Great defending by England...just obstruct and suffocate the attackers like Italy do.

1737: Small_alydd
WOW Master tactician, within 20 seconds Ecuador realise it's 2 on 1 now against Ashley Cole on the left flank!

1729: NewRed-m
England playing "proper" football now.

1726: Aidano101
OK Sven, do something to bring Rooney into the game more, if you want to make it 2-0.

1719: Uncle Rupert
Thank God.......are we saved?? Brilliant Becks

1717: Treboro 06/07

1714: Africansrule
This is a pathetic performance by England, one of the most boring games yet.

1701: ABC
England will improve in the second half. The whole midfield will step it up.

1648: Mainstay
Don't think Rooney is fully match fit yet. 0-0 at halftime, average match.

1643: Amaidment
Where is Beckham playing? I've barely seen him on the right, or anywhere else for that matter. Time to drop the captain.

1641: Mr Japan
I cannot believe with the team we have we're still playing the long ball. May as well bring Crouch on so at least they have an excuse.

1636: Treboro 06/07
We have no width further than the half way line -pathetic! Rooney is isolated

1630: Makalele6
This is stupid. Beckham's not even playin on the right, he's coming in too much and forcing Hargreaves to push forward and then leaves a gap at the back.

1627: Nadal Federer
Defence is on a par with the rest of the team. Considering this is much lauded first half performance, one can only imagine what is going to come in the second half.

1620: Pastitblade
Terry's having a mare at the moment.

They should be 1 nil up, we were lucky, lets hope we can settle down cos we had a bright start.

1611: Ernham
Looks like England are getting the "Brazil treatment". Taking the ball away from them with clean tackles is actually a foul. Three times now I've seen fair tackles that took the ball first get called as fouls.

1606: Roakey
Hargreaves is looking good.

1555: Supersmooth83
Here's to the match and fingers crossed!

1550: Oivlis Anulcics
I've got a funny feeling the name on everybody's lips at the end of the match is going to be...Theo Walcott! You heard it here first.

1546: sasro2001
If England play against Ecuador with the same performace they gave against Sweden, they will lose the game for sure!

1544: Pukel-man
Gerrard will score at least one, maybe more. He'll relish the attacking role, and Beckham will look for his head when crossing. I could still see Gerrard as a VERY outside bet for the Golden Boot.

1541: Guru Roghan Josh
With my Nostradamus hat on I reckon that England will go out of the tournament on penalties, with one player trying to place a penalty and it gets saved. England will go out of the tournament in this game or the next.

1533: rivaldo_9
It's time for England to go home. Ecuador to win 3-2.

1532: keepergirl
How long can Rooney really last in this heat playing alone up front? Score early and bring Crouch on for Rooney later if we have to.

1513: Proud Pompey Patriot
4-5-1 with Carrick holding and feeding, freeing Gerrard and Lampard to roam forward in support of Roo - it's a good formation that plays to our strengths and should also cut back on too much running in that heat. Time for a good game, lads. England Expects and all that!

1509: Collective
We should destroy Ecuador. We have world-class players in every position. Ecuador don't even have one.

1508: Ryan2008
Get rid of Carrick. He plays too many sideways passes, and he's supposed to be a creative player as well!

1506: dave_420
Finally Carrick is in the starting line! This will hopefully see Lampard and Gerrard bursting forward to support Rooney. COME ON ENGLAND!!!

1435: Besonders
If Ealing comedies and St Trinian's films have taught me anything, it's that the hapless, ragtag, but spirited gang always come through in the end. Carry On Svengland!

1404: 01lordj
All England need to do is PASS. If we pass we play, if we play we have chances, if we have chances we score. Sven mate, it's not rocket science, it's football.

1337: Fowler_The_Prowler
I do root for England but the fact is they don't have what it takes to win the World Cup.

1301: nickf1
This match shouldn't be a problem, so long as we can feed the ball to Beckham, and Hargreaves can cope as a right-back. Gerrard and Lampard having more freedom and playing Rooney up front should give us enough pace to control the game, 2-1 or 3-0!

1248: richmed10
England have good players, but our performances have been mediocre too. This is going to be a close one.

1225: Rimbeux
To beat the heat, you keep the ball, let it do the work, and don't play gung ho brainless football, it is that simple. My fear is that our mentality will not be strong enough to do this, we'll lose patience, and end up trying to play Rooney in with long balls, and then waste energy trying to get upfield in support. I hope I'm wrong, I hope we keep calm and patient.

1223: StoneEd
Hopefully, with the exclusion of Crouch, we will see a shorter passing game from England. In fact, we NEED to play a shorter game when Rooney is the sole striker. Carrick is a great passer; if he can find space and offer a passing option at all times then we will control the posession. Carragher can rightly feel hard done by if he loses his place to Hargreaves but I have to agree that with 4-1-4-1 we need more attacking fullbacks. A Cole and Hargreaves arent the best in the air - let's hope Ecuador dont target them.

1203: RedDevil
The use of Carrick in the 'quarterback position' is sensible, provided Sven deploys him in a primarily defensive role and he keeps it simple. Long range speculative passes over the top to Rooney will negate our main strength: central midfield.

1105: Shane M
Write England off at your own peril. On paper I don't care what anyone says we have the best team in the world. You only need to look at our performances in the Champions League to see that the players we have put out are genuine quality. A lot of our hopes now do rest on the performances of Rooney and Gerrard AND Becks.

1104: red4eva
England are facing a South American team in our continent so if anyone should be complaining about playing in adverse conditions it's them. If we fail to beat Ecuador I am not prepared to take the excuse of the weather.

1056: mustardcharlie
Personally I would have stuck with 4-4-2 and given Walcott a go.

1055: tripitaka66
I don't really understand the wisdom of switching Hargreaves to right back. We'd been searching for a good defensive midfielder for ages, no point switching him to right back where he looked useless. Carragher is dependable in that role.

1047: Shaneomac2006
The England line-up has been crying out for a player like Carrick to come in. I think this will be our best performance so far for many reasons. The heat will no doubt play a factor, however, the players are probably a lot more used to the temperature now, and it will be about 5pm at kick-off in Germany and the sun is certainly not at its peak, if it was a 2pm kick-off I would worry then, but at 5pm it will be MUCH cooler.

1044: taxi_driver
It doesn't matter who we are playing, we will lose unless we are two goals up at half-time. The heat makes it a certainty that we will we be hanging on to any lead in the second half.

1042: formuala1
England should overcome Ecuador. However, its resources will be very stretched if Rooney is injured. He will also be marked out of the game, which will present England with limited attacking variety and options.

1040: dave
I'm just concerned that we only have one real forward up front, who will probably be Rooney. He does link up play, allowing midfielders to score, but I wonder if it will work against a resolute Ecuador? Teams do tend to prefer to be defensive at these stages, like Mexico were yesterday.
