Fernando Alonso hopes to prove wrong the old adage that you never go back to the scene of former triumphs as he returns to the Renault team.

Alonso's reputation took a bit of a battering through a tempestuous 2008, after which he split with McLaren two years before his contract was up.

But he remains a truly great driver, and he will be doubly determined to prove to McLaren just what they let go.

Whether Renault's car will match his talent, though, is an open question.
