Methody win rugby's Schools' Cup
![]() Methody skipper Richard Simms receives Schools' Cup
Methodist College 8-6 Inst
Methodist College beat holders Royal Belfast Academical Institution in Monday's Renault Ulster Schools' Cup final. They shaded the all-Belfast clash with left-wing Andrew Hassard going over for the only try of the game nine minutes from the end. It was Methody's 29th success in the 125-year-old competition. But they were made to fight all the way by a gallant Inst team. Although Methody had the wind in their favour in the first half, they were just 3-0 in front at the break, thanks to Johnny McLaughlin being successful with his third penalty attempt.
But two penalties from outstanding flyhalf Glen Telford had Inst 6-3 in the lead early in the seond half. Methody piled on the pressure and got their reward with Hassard's try after the ball had been moved out to the left flank. McLaughlin missed the conversion, leaving Methody just two points in front at 8-6. Telford had a difficult penalty chance in injury-time to clinch victory for RBAI. But his kick from out on the left wing went just wide and Methody breathed a huge sigh of relief.
