Britain slip to defeat in Germany

hockey

Great Britain men's side lost their series against world champions Germany after suffering a 2-1 defeat in the third and final Test in Dusseldorf.

The sides were locked at 0-0 after a tight first half but Sebastian Draguhn put the hosts ahead only for Britain's Richard Mantell to equalise.

But Germany sealed the win when Jan Marco Montag converted another penalty corner 12 minutes from time.

"This was the closest battle yet," said GB assistant coach Dave Bunyan.

"This is the second time we have played on this pitch out here. It is a fast surface which demands a fast game which led to turnover from both teams."

Nothing could separate Germany and Britain in the opening two games, with the sides battling out 2-2 and 4-4 draws.

Great Britain continue their warm-up for the Beijing Olympics when they travel to Dublin to take part in the Setanta Trophy next month.
