Defensive end Michael Strahan is to retire after a 15-year NFL career with the New York Giants capped by a Super Bowl victory in February.
The 36-year-old, selected for seven Pro Bowls, was the league's active leader in quarterback sacks.
Strahan hinted at retirement last season and missed almost all of pre-season training camp.
But he returned to help the Giants make the Super Bowl where they sealed a 17-14 win over favourites New England.
Houston-born Strahan played college football at Texas Southern University and was drafted by the Giants in 1993.
He was named as the NFL's defensive player of the year in 2001.
