Ridley's medal hopes dashed

Jenny Ridley
British wheelchair racer Jenny Ridley's Paralympic medal hopes in Athens are in ruins after she was re-classified.

Ridley had been classified by the GB authorities in the T52 category but she had to undergo an international classification before competing.

The re-classification brought her up to the T53 category which is for less disabled athletes

The decision was appealed by the British Paralympic team but a second classification was upheld.

It means that she will compete against team-mate Tanni Grey Thompson in the T53 400m final on Saturday.

But because there is no T53 200m, she will compete instead in the T54 200m - a jump of two categories. The heats for that get underway on Sunday.

"I'm cross and frustrated," said Ridley. "It's been a very difficult week."

"But I'm glad that I've had such good support from the team around me and I'm thinking what to do next."
