The British Paralympic Association has launched an appeal to raise £1.5m over six years to help British athletes win medals at future Paralympic Games.
Retired businessman Peter Harrison has helped to get the appeal started by pledging £500,000.
"Since the first Games (1960), Britain has consistently been among the top nations," said president Mike Brace.
"The BPA needs to ensure that athletes have the best possible opportunities to create lifetime-best performances."
The appeal was launched at St James's Palace by the Earl of Wessex, a patron of the organisation.
The aim is to raise funds through contributions from individuals, charitable foundations and company charitable giving.
Brace added: "The money raised through this appeal will help us nurture and support our athletes so that they can put in medal-winning performances in Beijing in 2008, Vancouver in 2010 and in front of a home crowd at the London 2012 Paralympic Games."
