English Open re-named for Hunter

Hunter was a hugely popular among fellow players and fans alike

Paul Hunter is to have a prestigious amateur tournament named in his memory. He died of cancer, aged 27, last year.

The Paul Hunter English Open will take place in his home city of Leeds from 14-21 August.

Hunter first made his name in the amateur ranks, winning the Northern section of the English Amateur Championship in 1995.

For each entry received for the event, organisers will donate £5 to the Paul Hunter Foundation.

The charity, established by Hunter's widow Lindsey, aims to introduce disabled and underprivileged children to snooker.

English Association of Snooker and Billiards tournament committee chairman John Hartley said: "In memory of Paul, the EASB has received permission from his family to rename the English Open.

"We hope all snooker playing friends and admirers of Paul, both professional and amateur, will be supporting the event.

"The event has been given the support of the Hunter family who have agreed to present the prizes."
