Pacific Barbarians 36-16 Wales

Wales were given a rude awakening by the Pacific Barbarians in Tokyo on Wednesday after their weekend win against Japan in the first Test.

A young and inexperienced tourists team came up against a physically stronger Barbarians side that included a host of former All Blacks.

With 14 changes from the team that hammered Japan 64-10 on Sunday, Wales were stunned as the Barbarians ran in two tries in the first seven minutes in an explosive start.

The Barbarians continued to dominate forward play for much of the game but only led 17-16 at half-time thanks to spirited defence from Wales.

Llanelli wing Mark Jones was the best player on the pitch for the Welsh, scoring their only try and breaking through the Barbarians back-line on several occasions.

However, Wales suffered a late blow as Jones was stretchered off near the end of the game.

No answer

The tourists showed their frustration at being frequently overwhelmed by a well-organised Barbarians pack as punches were thrown in the second half and captain Chris Stephens was sent to the sin-bin.

The decision to appoint the Bridgend lock as Wales captain for the match had been criticised by Ioan Bebb, whose playing career with Cross Keys was ended by a punch from Stephens.

Bebb suffered a detached retina and Stephens was ordered to pay £2,000 compensation by magistrates last December after admitting inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Neath fly-half Lee Jarvis scored a conversion and three penalties, including a long-range effort from just inside the opposition half, but Wales had no real answer to the four tries from the Barbarians.

Jamie Washington, Walter Little, Simana Mafileo and Kyle Byers each touched down once for the Barbarians.

Former All Black Adrian Cashmore added two conversions and also kicked four penalties.
