BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2007 contender Becky Brewerton has enjoyed her best year so far as a golf professional.

The 24-year-old from Abergele won her maiden Ladies European Tour title - the Ladies English Open - in July, having posted 16 top-10s including four runner-up spots in her career before that.

That helped Brewerton, who has career earnings of 447,000 euros, become the first Welsh golfer to qualify to play in the European Solheim Cup team.

The Welshwoman held her own in the foursomes with Laura Davies, winning one and losing one, although the USA won the trophy by 16 points to 12.

Brewerton announced she would be a formidable addition to the professional ranks as an amateur in 2003, taking second place at the Tenerife Ladies Open in her first LTA invitation.

That had never been in doubt, though, with Brewerton boasting a fine amateur record: Welsh Girls Champion 1997 and 1998; Welsh Ladies Champion 1999 and 2001; British Ladies Open amateur strokeplay champion 1999 and 2002; European Ladies Open Champion 2002; Curtis Cup player 2000.

Brewerton's first year as a professional saw her again runner-up in Tenerife, with thirds at the Spanish Open and the KLM Open.

Although 2005 brought only one third place at the Ladies English Open, it was a much more consistent Brewerton as she missed just two cuts all year.

Although the top places on the LTA continued to elude Brewerton in 2006, the consistency was raised another notch with five top-10 finishes and a further five in the top-20.

But that season was capped by a superb third place in the Women's World Cup of Golf, in tandem with long-time playing partner Becky Morgan battling through in Sun City, South Africa.

Brewerton is set to continue her professional career in America next year by joining the Ladies Professional Golf Association.
