Calzaghe claims BBC Wales award
2007 BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year Joe Calzaghe

Joe Calzaghe has been named 2007 BBC Wales Sport Personality of the Year, becoming only the second recipient of the award in successive years.

Undefeated Calzaghe became undisputed world super-middleweight boxing champion in November when he beat WBA and WBC champion Mikkel Kessler.

He won 77% of the public vote, beating Becky Brewerton, Geraint Thomas, Ryan Giggs and Enzo Maccarinelli.

Former Wales rugby captain Cliff Morgan won the Lifetime Achievement award.

Cricketer James Harris and swimmer Jemma Lowe, both 17, won the Carwyn James youngster awards at the glittering ceremony at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.

Glamorgan's Harris became the youngest player to take seven wickets in an innings and 10 or more wickets in a County Championship match when he finished with figures of 12-118 against Gloucestershire in May.

The Pontarddulais youngster then became Glamorgan's youngest scorer of a half century when he hit 87 not out Nottinghamshire - 13 runs short of setting another record as the youngest County Championship centurion.

Lowe, based in Hartlepool, became the first Welsh woman to break a British swimming record in more than 30 years on her way to winning the 100m butterfly at the National Championships in July.

A month later, she broke her new record at an international event in Japan, where she reached the finals in the 100m and 200m butterfly.

The Team of the Year award went to The New Saints Football Club.

The Saints won their third successive Welsh Premier title this year and claimed the FAW Premier Cup for the first time, beating Cardiff City in the process.

The Unsung Hero Award went to Andrew Grey of Milford Haven Gymnastics Club, who is also involved with the Pembrokeshire Under-11 rugby team.

Calzaghe enjoyed another remarkable 12 months that are a landmark in even his memorable career, and his landslide victory in the public vote underlined his achievements.

In April he made the 20th defence of his WBO crown against Peter Manfredo Jr and then celebrated the 10-year anniversary of claiming the WBO belt in October - extending his reign as the longest-reigning world champion in boxing today.

But perhaps the defining moment of Calzaghe's distinguished career came in November when he showed courage of a true champion to recover from a difficult start to beat Kessler at the Millennium Stadium.

He joins Ian Woosnam in winning the BBC Wales award two years in a row, and joined Woosnam, Howard Winstone, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, and Colin Jackson as three-time winners.

"I thought last year was the best year of my life as far as my boxing goes, but this one's even better," said Calzaghe after collecting his award from Jonathan Davies.

"To be undisputed champion of the world is incredible. But this trophy is not just for me - boxing is an individual sport but I've got a great team behind me.

"And thanks to me family for all their support - to Jo-Emma, my sisters, mum and dad, and Joe and Connor my little boys - this is for you guys. I love you all."

The award for rugby and broadcasting legend Cliff Morgan is timely, as next spring will mark the 50th anniversary of Morgan's retirement from international rugby, having won 29 caps for Wales since 1951.

Morgan was part of the 1952 Welsh Grand Slam winning team and went on to become a key member of the legendary British Lions team in South Africa in 1955, becoming Welsh Captain in 1956.

Following his retirement from international rugby, the 77-year-old Morgan carved out a successful career in broadcasting becoming Head of Sport and Outside Broadcasts for BBC TV.

  • BBC Wales will pay tribute to the life and work of Cliff Morgan in a special programme, Cliff Morgan: A Lifetime of Achievement on BBC One Wales on Tuesday, 4 December at 2235 GMT.
