Pavey races to Manchester victory

Jo Pavey Britain's Jo Pavey produced a world-class performance to win the Great Manchester Run on Sunday.

The 33-year-old took control of the 10km race in the last kilometre and won in 31 minutes and 41 seconds, with Hungary's Aniko Kalovics in second.

In the men's race, Kenyan Micah Kogo broke Haile Gebreselassie's UK all-comers' record by four seconds, finishing in a time of 27:24.

Britain's Mo Farah put in an excellent display to finish third in 28:07.

The 20-year-old Kogo, who was the world's fastest 10,000m runner on the track this season, held off a strong challenge from defending champion Zersenay Tadesse, who had to settle for second place.

After her victory Pavey was quick to thank Kalovics for breaking up the field at the halfway point.

"She really put the boot in there and four of us pulled away from the rest of the field and made it a great race," said Pavey.

"I was feeling OK despite the pressure and in the last two kilometres decided to give it a go and began forcing the pace.

"That was a hard race and really tested me, particularly in the closing stages."
