GB's men grab European Cup glory

Phillips Idowu

Britain's men claimed their fifth European Cup crown, while the women did well to cling to bronze after an exciting final day in Annecy, France.

Phillips Idowu had a triple jump best of 17.46m, Marlon Devonish triumphed in the 200m and Andy Baddeley left it late to win a stunning 3,000m.

Long jumper Jade Johnson was GB's female star of the day with a personal best 6.81m helping her to second.

Christine Ohuruogu (200m) and Kate Reed (5,000m) impressed with second places.

Idowu, the 29-year-old world indoor champion, started slowly with a first jump of 15.71m, but settled with a fine third jump to seal a comfortable victory and will now be a favourite for gold in Beijing.

Idowu was delighted with his first European Cup win. "I needed to get a jump in today and win and that's what I did," he told BBC Sport.

"I wanted a little bit more but a win is a win and I'm still on top of the world. I reckon I can even put down another one metre."

In the 200m, Devonish squeezed home first with a season's best time of 20.52s, but admitted it had not gone smoothly.

"I stumbled and made that hard work," he said. "My experience definitely helped me through. It was poor technically but I'll take the points."

GB team Following his Dream Mile victory in Oslo last week, Baddeley ran a storming final stretch to come through in the 3,000m in a time of 8:01.28.

To conclude the weekend's action, the men's 4x400m relay team was second with Rob Tobin, Dale Garland, Conrad Williams and Martyn Rooney all putting on a good show .

Kelly Sotherton impressed in the 4x400m relay alongside team-mates Ohuruogu, Marilyn Okoro and Vicki Barr to grab fifth spot to end ahead of Poland and guarantee their top three spot.

The star of the women's team on Sunday was long jumper Johnson. She has struggled with a series of injuries but a final leap of 6.81m helped her grab an excellent second spot.

"It has taken a long four years and it's been emotional but it's all really nice," she said. "They now call me the comeback kid."

Reed called her 5,000m race "hell" as she finished second after a fabulous showing in the searing French heat, while Ohuruogu fought a hard 200m race to finish second.

Andrew Lemoncello battled to a fine third place in the 3,000m steeplechase with a dazzling late sprint to finish in a time of 8:36.33.

Steven Lewis made 5.40m in the pole vault and had to settle for third, while Allan Scott surpassed expectations to finish fourth in the 110m hurdles.

In the 800m, Richard Hill was a late replacement for Michael Rimmer and did well to grab fifth place in a time of 1:50.65. Michael Allen was seventh in the javelin.

Susan Scott was third in the 1500m, Susan Moncrieff was sixth in the high jump, Emeka Udechuku was fifth in the discus and Sarah Claxton struggled in the 100m hurdles in last position.

Rebecca Peake was last in the shot put with a throw of 14.84m, and Zoe Derham threw a season's best in the hammer of 66.85m to finish seventh.

Next year the tournament will change its name to the European Team Championships, the top tier will have 12 nations and there will be promotion and relegation among the different divisions.

There will also be a number of rule changes with the elimination of the slowest racers being introduced, for example, in the 3,000m, 5,000m and steeplechase.
