Mitchell targets European crown

Kevin Mitchell Kevin Mitchell says a European title fight could follow his British super-featherweight victory on Saturday at the O2 Arena.

The 23-year-old Londoner stretched his unbeaten run to 26 bouts when he stopped Carl Johanneson in the ninth round to add to his Commonwealth belt.

Mitchell told BBC London 94.9: "I'm hoping for a European title fight next, but we'll see where the money takes us.

"Perhaps if there's a bigger money fight I'll take that instead."

It was Mitchell's first fight at the O2 Arena in London and he says it is a venue to rival any in the world.

He added: "It's unbelievable, I've always packed out small venues like York Hall - places that the boxing fans love. But I think from now on these are the sort of places that I want to be filling out.

"It's absolutely unbelievable in there, the venue itself is unreal, it's the best venue in England at the moment. It's like being in Vegas, people said its the same kind of venue like that."

Mitchell was watched by the Commonwealth lightweight champion Amir Khan at the weekend and says a future fight between the two could be a possibility.

"I asked him if he enjoyed the fight, he's a nice lad he was cheering me on," he said.

"I think one day it certainly could happen, it's a bit further down the line from now, he'll need a lot more fights to learn and do what he does and the same for me.

"But I think towards the end of our careers at 27 or 28 we'd both like to fight each other."
