African goals in Europe: 19-20 Apr

Freddy Kanoute

England

Zimbabwe's Benjani Mwaruwari helped Manchester City take full advantage of an off-day for the Portsmouth defence to win 3-1 and keep themselves in with a chance of qualifying for the Uefa Cup next season.

The Warriors' captain scored the third to seal victory although he declined to celebrate the goal afterwards out of respect to his former club.

Mwaruwari was playing against Portsmouth for the first time since his transfer in January.

Nigeria's John Utaka scored in the same game to give Portsmouth their consolation.

Elsewhere in the English Premier League, Togo's Emmanuel Adebayor fired-in Arsenal's first to help his side to a 2-nil win over Reading.

Italy

Mali striker and African footballer of the year Frederic Kanoute missed a penalty in the 70th minute for 10-man Sevilla but netted three minutes later in a 4-1 by Almeria.

The defeat meant that Sevilla drifted further down the table to sixth.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, look set to clinch a 31st league title after opening a 10-point lead at the top.

France

Ivory Coast forward Aruna Dindane scored twice for Lens to dismiss Sochaux 3-2.

His Malian compatriot Adama Coulibaly had put Lens ahead after six minutes for a vital victory to ease relegation fears.

Senegal's Mamadou Niang was on target for Marseille but Lille came from behind to win 3-1 with Cameroon's Jean Makoun's goal sealing victory.

Elsewhere, The Gabonese Eric Mouloungui was sent-off just before half-time as his side Strasbourg were beaten 2-1 by Lyon.

Holland

Ghanaian striker Matthew Amoah put NAC Breda ahead but could not prevent visiting NEC Nijmegen fighting back to a 3-1 win.

His compatriot Eric Addo won his sixth Dutch title with PSV Eindhoven after beating Vitesse Arnhem 1-0.

Scotland

Gabon's Daniel Cousin scored the final penalty for Rangers in their shootout victory over first division St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

The game had ended goalless after normal time - St Johnstone then took the lead in extra time before Cousin was fouled in the area which allowed Nacho Novo to equalise from the penalty spot.

The premier league side eventually won 4-3 on penalties thanks to Cousin's winner.

Ghana's Laryea Kingston grabbed the winner for Hearts as they edged out Motherwell 3-2.

Portugal

Malian midfielder Mourtala Diakite scored the only goal of the game as Boavista edged passed Nacional.

Cameroon striker Serge N'gal scored the third goal for Leiria in their 4-1 defeat of Sporting Lisbon.

Belgium

DR Congo midfielder Marcel Mbayo scored to put his side Lokeren in the lead though they also lost - 3-2 this time to Cercle Bruges.

Fellow Congolese Dieumerci Mbokani scored both goals as Standard Liege outclassed Anderlecht 2-0.

The result meant Standard are league champions as they extended their lead ahead of Anderlecht to 10 points.

Mahamadou Dissa equalised to make it 2-2 for Roulers against Mechelen - Cameroonian Aloys Nong had scored the two other goals.

Nigerian Joseph Akpala is top scorer in the league with his 16th of the season as he scored one for his side Charleroi in a 2-2 draw with Zulte-Waregem.
